Pregnancy is possible after Essure reversal

Although the manufacturer of the Essure device states it is not reversible, the tubal reversal doctors at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center have successfully removed Essure coils from women wishing to become pregnant again. Pregnancy after Essure reversal is possible.

Hello all,
I have been reading the message boards for a couple weeks now and I would like to thank all of you for sharing your stories. It makes me feel good to know that I am not the only one who now longs for a baby after my decision to sterilize. I have not seen any posts about women having the Essure reversed (removed) and I thought it would be a good idea to share my story.

I had the essure done in November 2006. At the time I thought it was the right thing to do and now nearly 3 years later I regret having done the procedure. I am schedule with Dr. Berger on August 26, 2009 to have Essure reversal. I am hopeful that I will become pregnant again.

Hello 11Needles,

What is the Essure?? I haven't heard of that. I to am scheduled August 26th with Dr. Monteith. See you then!

It is a procedure where they put small metal coils in fallopian tubes to create scare tissue to block your tubes. It is an outpatient procedure that is an alternative to the traditional TL. I do believe there is a page on this web site that explains it better than I do. ha ha

11Needles,

Take a look at this link for information regarding the reversal of the Essure http://www.tubal-reversal.net/blog/2007/tubal-ligation/essure-tubal-reversal.html

I was surfing the net (yet again) to see if I could find any bfp for an essure reversal and I came across a site that report tube lenghts of Left: 12cm Right: 9cm - after an essure reversal. I don't understan how that can be. I know Dr. Berger has only done a couple essure reversals but I was under the impression that the lengths would be shorter than the average TR length??

Posted by AnitaA68 August 14, 2009 08:57 PM:

Well then I think that person had above average tubal length because the average uncut tube length is 10cm.

I am so excited, my surgery is in 4 weeks...well 3 weeks and 6 days...but who's counting right? LOL!!
With the initial conversations with the staff they are all wonderful and caring professionals.
My husband and I look forward to the possibility of a baby after the Essure procedure is reversed.

Rsatterson, congratulations!! Glad that you have scheduled yout apt. I am hoping that Dr Berger can make it work. My coils are not visable in my uterus so I am so scared. How long ago did you have your procedure done?

Hello 11 Needles & RSatteson,

First, I want to thank you for posting here. I also had the Essure procedure- 10/2006. My PTLS has been so horrific that I sought out Dr B and have placed a deposit to also have a reversal. I am thinking that I will either have the reversal this fall or next spring.

I would love to hear as many details as each of you are willing to share regarding recovery from the procedure and also recovery from PTLS.

My story is this: I am a married MD. I am in my thirties and I am luckily in a "lifestyle specialty" (I work 50 hour weeks instead of 80). As I am a resident physician still in training, there are only certain times of the year that I can take time off to have the reversal. I have also been hesitant because, well I have scrubbed into too many surgeries gone wrong. So, I know that sometimes even the procedures that should not be too complicated can so south, and quickly. That said, the overwhelming majority of surgeries like this are successful and without complications. So, I had a threefold approach when deciding to sign up with Dr Berger: first, I prayed a lot. Second, I did a lot of my own research on the surgery and the available surgeons at this time. Last, I waited and hoped my PTLS would improve.

As far as why I choose Dr B- it came down to his obvious experience in this field. I called the other provider's office (who currently offers the Essure reversal) and was told that the current length of time under general anesthesia would be four hours. Dr Berger is able to do this reversal in approximately one to 1.5 hours (this is what I was told when I spoke with one of his nurses, and as he does not charge any more than for a regular tubal, I assume it to be true- OR time = money). The price was also considerably higher with the other provider. So, the bottom line is that I wanted for myself the most experienced surgeon I could obtain, and I feel that I have found that in Dr Berger.

Regarding the PTLS, it hasn't gone away. I was more than willing to loose the deposit on the procedure- in the hope that it would magically vanish and I would not loose myself 5 -7 days out of the month. So, now that I am three years poost- Essure, I feel confident that having the reversal is worth the risks of surgery. I only hope that the PTLS begins to subside and quickly! As for babies- perhaps now I am ambivalent about that more than the past, but that is not the primary reason I am seeking out this reversal. It is PTLS.

I hope you are recovering well 11 needles. Thanks again for initiating this post. Please keep us updated on your recovery!

ashtangi , you have found the right doctor and facility. CHTRC is a private surgical center where Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith perform 4-5 surgeries/day Monday - Friday. Tubal Reversal is their focus and thus, they are continually adjusting and improving the surgical and recovery experience. Both doctors are very progressive and appreciate patient suggestions. The surgery only lasts 1- 1 and 1/2 hours. Look forward to having you at the center.

ashtangi,
Well I am back at work today (5 days after surgery) I have a desk job and manage a group of 18 people. I feel GREAT!!! I didn't tell anyone at work that I was having surgery and no one has noticed that I went through surgery. as far as PTLS although I was never diagnosed with it I believe that Essure is the result of some of the problems I have been experiencing since I had it done in November 2006. the Main issue is Anemia. I take Iron 3 times a day during my cycles and one pill a day the rest of the time and my blood levels are still low. At this point I am tired of being tired (if that makes sense). I feel really good an am very happy that I had the reversal. You are in excellent hands with Dr Berger. After the surgery my tube lengths are both 9 cm YEAH!!!! I will keep you posted with my progress. If you have any questions at all please let me know. I am happy to share experience with you. . . . Thank you.

ashtangi I did not have the same thing done as you but I did have really bad PTLS. Which I am so happy to say has improved greatly. I am working with Dr.B on the PTLS topic. I wish you all the best. If you would like it my email is ranisheets23 at yahoo. You have picked the right doctor. Miranda

11 Needles, In God's Hands & Jan,

Wow, thanks for the awesomely quick replies to this thread.

I think it may be of benefit to others in the future, and it has already been helpful to me.
11 Needles: Glad to hear that you are doing so well! Without disclosing too much identifying information, can you please share this with me: what would you describe as your overall "physical condition" prior to the surgery: physically fit, average, overweight, etc... The reason I ask is that I would be curious to hear how well you are recovering. General physical condition has a direct reflection on how quickly folks tend to recover after surgery. Considering the fact that you are just 5 days post- op and going back to work, I take that to be a great sign overall.

I intend to give myself at least a week off, and will shoot for more like seven full post-op days before I return. I also intend to do a whole lot of preventative- holistic interventions (mainly, fish oil, a great multi vitamin, MSM ( a MUST for healing tissues), zero refined foods, no alcohol, and some good old carrot juice and wheatgrass juice. Yes, I am a health- food nut. I am very into healthy living and taking care of myself. Ironically, I think this has contributed to the PTLS- my theory is that my overall state of health tilted me towards localized rejection of the Essure coils- because I am so otherwise well...

So, I am curious how you are feeling in relationship to how you would expect to feel considering your overall health status and prior to the surgery.

Also, I would LOVE to hear if your anemia and fatigue improve. My body literally shuts down a few days prior to menses now, something it just did not do before Essure. Please keep us posted on how and if you feel a "return to normalcy" over the next few months. Also, are you needing to take much medication for the pain? Hopefully not...THANKS!

Congrats on the 9CM tube length. Very nice indeed.

Jan- if you read this... how long post Essure can one resume both exercise and/or sex? I am specifically going to target healing well in order to prevent adhesions... not that "I" really have anything to do with it... I know it is up to God. But as a doctor, you know that I know too much and I just dread the thought of developing adhesions. So, I want to follow all the "rules" and heal well.

In God's Hands- If you want any info on my PTLS, I will gladly share with you!

Thanks everyone here for sharing.
It is MUCH appreciated!

ashtangi,
I would say that I am average, 5ft 6in (although Erica RN would say i am 5ft 5in) [Wink] about 130. . . I try to exercise but don't like to. I think I am just lucky. This is my second Major surgery this year (had my thyroid removed in January-nothing wrong with the functionality but had two large nodules in it). I don't take vitamins. . .my diet. . . let me put it this way, there is nothing wrong with eating ice cream for breakfast. . . it has MILK! As far as how I expected to feel. . well I figured I would feel like crap afterward. Surprisingly I feel good. Yes I experiencing some pain but its more of an annoyance than anything and its not constant pain either. Before Essure I was pretty active. . single parent of two boys who play sports I would generally sleep about 2 to 4 hours a night my house was always clean and laundry always done. After essure I pretty much couldn't do anything. I began sleeping about 15 hours didn't want to do anything either. clean house, take kids places, I pretty much became a home-body.

Natural pregnancy is possible after Essure removal, Read Essure reversal patient Michelle's experience  proof that all of the above are possible.

Choosing Where To Have Your Tubal Reversal

Women explain why they decided to go to Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center to have their tubes repaired.

An active topic on the Tubal Reversal Message board was started by 'WIMom27' who asked other women why they decided to go to Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center to have their tubes repaired. She gets a lot of responses such as these from 'tammyfromWI' who posts, "I was actually directed to CHTRC thru the UW-Madison's Infertility Clinic. They told me that it was well know all over the U.S and throughout the world. I could have had it done at the UW's clinic but they told me it would cost around $20,000 and have to do an inpatient stay. I talked to them for about five more minutes, came home, researched the website, and then made the call to CHTRC. I scheduled my surgery for 3/24/10. We decided to wait a couple months to TTC and in June started. We did end up with a BFP. It was a keeper. I'm currently 19 weeks pregnant and so happy with my decision to go with them. They do this everyday and know what they are doing." 'Yumenut' writes, "I flew to NC from Moscow Russia to have my surgery at CHTRC on 10/14/10. I don't regret one dime that we spent on the trip or the surgery. You can tell from the message boards and the information on this website that the entire staff cares about every patient." 'ChrisNbrian' follows up with, "I choose Chapel Hill ultimately because that is where my doctor recommended. He said that one of his associates does the TR but Dr Berger is less expensive and has a higher success rate. I just kept hearing my doctors words in my head telling me that reversals are all that CH does and Dr Berger is the best in the business!" In short, if you want the best chance of becoming pregnant after tubal ligation, go to Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center.

A couple of years ago when I first found CHTRC and started doing my research on TR, I might have already asked this question.... but, I am back to doing my research AGAIN and trying to really get all the info I can to make an informed decision! I am torn between deciding between 2 different TR facilities and just want to know how others made their decision to use CHTRC? How do you feel about your decision? What factors helped you make that decision? I just want to be absolutely sure I am making the right decision, because I cannot afford the time or money to do this more than once!

It would be to my surprise if you were able to find "1" person who didn't have the most upmost respect for the doctors and staff at CHTRC. You will not find any better care at any other facility. If you read on this message board, you will see the amazing stories that have taken place in many of our lives from the moment we left CHTRC a new woman, with the chance to conceive again. Every member of their staff truly cares about your well being and gives you the highest level of care. As you can see, I am a huge fan.

WImom27~ the question is~ This other doctor that you found, does he/she only do this surgery every day or do they do other things??? I know I would only want the best doing this surgery and in my opinion CH is the best!!!! I had my surgery on Thursday and feel great!!!! You will not be disappointed by going to CH!!! They really do care!!!

I chose CHTRC because I liked the statistics I saw for success on the site, everything you wanted to know was laid out right there for you, even the hotel and transportation to and from it, no stressful navigating in a foreign land, risking being late or anything else. If you have any questions, the staff are all super friendly, and if they don't have the answer, they get it for you and get back to you that day or the next day. I also like that they use out of office responses on e-mail, so if it's going to take some time to get back to you, you know what day that person will be back. I liked that the doctors' experience in the field was explained on the site, and that the doctors are accessable to the patients, it's not "Please contact my nurse who will talk to me for you." I liked that the payment options were affordable and easy to arrange. Everything you needed to know about before, during, and after was easy to understand, everything they needed was easy to get to them. I have not regretted our decision at all, I have had a few surgeries in my life, all the others locally, and this was, by far, the easiest, and it was done by people I'd never met, in a place I'd never been!! Hope this helps, good luck on making your decision and for a successful procedure!! ~Liz

I also live in WI, in Weston (just south of Wausau). We debated because NC was the farthest of the places that we researched but for many reasons, they seemed to be the best choice. My best friend is also a nurse so I asked her opinion. She was so impressed with the details, statistics, pictures, message board and care that was put into the website that she agreed that we should go to CHTRC. TR surgery is ALL that they do there and in my opinion, they have it perfected! After we sent our money, I kept thinking that it was too good to be true. On our drive I thought, what if we get there and it's a vacant lot?! Sure enough it was as wonderful as everyone says. You will not regret it...

I liked so much about CH but it just had the right feel. It came down to CH and a place in Georgia and frankly, CH just felt right. After coming to CH, having my TR and having so much history on the boards - I would tell anyone that this place is second to none.

I'm from Wisconsin too! (Appleton) I choose CH ultimately because that is where my doctor recommended. He said that one of his associates does the TR but Dr Berger is less expensive and has a higher success rate. I did lots of research looking at other places but kept coming back to CH. I just kept hearing my doctors words in my head telling me that reversals are all that CH does and Dr Berger is the best in the business! NJgirlinWI, my husband and I thought what if we show up and there is just this dumpy old run down building with a "doctor" standing at the door waiting to do the surgery. We actually kept joking about it the 2 days before surgery. (we arrived on Saturday and surgery was Monday) Everytime the shuttle took us anywhere or when we went out for a walk we tried to find the trashiest place and say to the other one "yep, that's CH, step right up". I guess we have a weird sense of humor but I really think the joking part kept me from getting too nervous. Once we arrived at the real CHTRC we couldn't have been more pleased. The place was spotless and everyone was super nice.

I understand that everyone goes into this journey with the "what if" questions. I did. That's normal. Not everyone is gonna have the same outcomes. There are negatives along with many positives to it. That's why it's called a journey. I can promise you one thing. You will walk away from CHTRC and be very happy that you did it. I wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide to do!!

NJgirlinWI.... WOW... we are practically neighbors! I live only about 35-40 mins. from you, near Shawano! Thank you everyone for your responses. The issue I am having in deciding is that both places I am deciding between are "state of the art" facilities with TR specialists that ONLY perform TR surgeries and have both been doing it for over 30 years! Both places have support groups... but CH's website is definitely more informative and more supportive! I have just been afraid of choosing based solely on a good website..... Thank you for your feedback on your experiences.

WIMom27, I flew to NC from Moscow Russia to have my surgery at CHTRC on 10/14/10. I don't regret one dime that we spent on the trip or the surgery. You can tell from the message boards and the information on this website that the entire staff cares about every patient. They think of everything!!! I love the fact that they require you to stay at a certain hotel, which is fantastic, so a nurse can come check on you. If you decide on CHTRC, you won't be disappointed!

I forgot to mention that in my last post. As you are in the waiting area just before it's "your turn", there are 2 huge maps on the wall. One map is the US and one is the world, seriously! You put your pin into the map indicating where you are from. We were amazed at how far women come to have CHTRC do their surgery. My husband stayed at the hotel with our kiddo's and my mom drove up from SC to accompany me. She was skeptical at first but when she saw those maps, her eyes got big and her jaw dropped. For once, my darling (and very opinionated) mother was speechless!! It truly is impressive to see all of those colored pins on those maps. It made me realize just how many families have trusted Dr Berger (and now Dr M) to give them another chance...

Posted by laurie,CST (Member # 14932) on November 02, 2010 09:53 AM :
This is so true. CHTRC is the only place that specializes in tubal-reversal. So many people come all over the world to get their tubes reversed. Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith have follow-up statistics on the outcomes of their surgeries and publish them for everyone to see. No other doctor does this or even has this information! The center keeps in touch with each patient over the long term. CHTRC is the most dedicated tubal-reversal in the world. If you want the best results, this is the place you should come to.

WIMom27 be sure and keep us posted as to what you decide! Too bad we didn't find eachother sooner, we live so close to eachother that we could have carpooled to CHTRC

Posted by Megan, RN (Member # 14922) on November 03, 2010 09:33 AM :
Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith are the only physicians in the country with a practice that is specifically limited to tubal reversal surgery. Reversal surgery is the only procedure we perform here with each doctor performing 2 - 4 reversals daily. We have a high staff/patient ratio with one or two nurses devoted specifically to your care while you are here. All of our nurses have advanced certification in cardiac life support (ACLS) and our anesthesiologists are MD's with board certification in anesthesia. The anesthesiologists are employees here and not anesthesia staff from another hospital or anesthesia service. So everyone here has expertise in caring for and performing reversal surgery. While you are here, you will only be with other women and couples who are here specifically for the same purpose. Please do not hesitate to contact our office with any questions or concerns while making your decision. Megan, RN

WIMom27 CHTRC was the 1st center I cam across when I began thinking about a reversal. And at the time didn't think I wanted to travel from Iowa to NC. Then something in me changed. At that point...I have to tell you that I researched, visited, and had phone contact with more then 25 fertility/tubal reversal specialists across the country. At the time we started our search each of those centers/specialist advised me that the cost of the procedure would be $12000-$20000. My husband and I thought to ourselves, if that was the price we were going to have to pay to have another child, then so-be-it. Each of the offices received my surgical reports, took my $150 consultation fee, either scheduled an appointment or called me on the phone. And each one of them crushed my dreams by telling me that since my tubes were burned I really didn\'t't have a chance at conception even after a reversal and that I should go the IVF route. At that point I was very close to having my mind made up on a center in WI, but something in me told me to give CHTRC a call. So I did...and I think from the second I was greeted over the phone my mind was made up. Each time I have called with an issue, my questions and concerns have all been address by the most friendly, knowledgeable, and caring staff in which I have ever encountered. I send over my surgical report and other information, and within an hour received confirmation that regardless of having my tubes burned during the ligation, they saw no reason why I would not have a very successful chance of conception. The very next day I scheduled my surgery and am now exactly 30 days from my surgery date. I am not only anxious for my surgery, but feel like I have already been made a part of a big CHTRC family and can't wait to meet everyone that has contacted me via phone and email. So if I can tell you anything to help you make your decision it is to call and speak with staff as much as you need to before making your desicion. As woman you know what is best for you and will ultimately make the right choice for you and only you!
~Best Wishes~

Thank you for all of your comments everyone... I honestly feel that I have made my decision final to have my TR at CHTRC! I keep hearing from the other center I was looking at about how wonderful their after care is, etc.... but I have yet to see any of their staff participate in their support board like CHTRC does. Not only do the nurses and other staff join in on discussions but I have seen several posts by Dr. M on here as well, which has really impressed me. I think the longer it takes for me to get the money together and get this going the more doubts I tend to have.... then I get those doubts under control.... then start wondering about things again. I do appreciate all of the support on this board and I haven't even scheduled my surgery yet! Hoping that I can at least send in my deposit to open my account within the next couple of weeks!

WImom27, You will not regret having your surgery at CHTRC! I too researched just about every place there was and I just kept coming back to CH. No other place could compare to the statistics and like you said, the support and care shows here on the message board, but just WAIT until you see how you are cared for in person! I don't know which TR center you are talking about and I am not sure what I am allowed to say here, but I considered one b/c it looked so fabulous on their website...at first..and they had a message board yes. But I decided to steer clear of that place. I decided that a lot of effort made to make comparison charts to other TR centers and promises to re-reverse tubes if they become blocked is not a good way to try to reel in business, when CHTRC just has facts and REAL numbers that show their success without having to make cheap shots like that. alltiedup.... I'm pretty sure we are talking about the same other TR center.... and the things you mentioned are part of my reasons for not being sure about that one.... I have kept coming back to CH for several years, because of the support board, the wonderful information, the support from the staff, and the statistics, etc. I think I need to stop 2nd guessing and just go with my gut on this one! Thanks for all the support everyone! Now, if I can just pull together the money... we will be in business!

Another Wisconsin girl here (Ashland). I was referred to a University Minnesota hospital to do my surgery, for a starting price of $12,000. I had a feeling that it did not cover lab fees, consultations and so forth. Turns out I was right when I called and talked to their financial representative. That made me start looking on the web for alternatives. The thing I was immediately aware of was that I would have to travel across country no matter which place I choose, being that the quiet of northern Wisconsin is quiet for a reason. The reason I chose Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center was there commitment to their cause. We are what they do. They listen and respond. Right from initial phone questions to panic attacks before surgery, they are there with a gentle hand on your back.
The surgery was simple, the flight back to Minneapolis uneventful. My biggest concern was the 4 hour ride home from airport the day after surgery but with a few pain pills that too was a piece of cake. My baby making skills are not working for me yet, but I am not 25 anymore. There are days when I want to quit(usually CD2, when depression hits) but then by CD10 I am ready to try again.
The only advice I have is to live your life when going through this. Buy those jeans that are on sale, take that little trip, laugh when you can and hold as many babies that are offered to you. Tammy

Wow Tammy, what wise words!!! I'm pre TR and so, so, so, worried that it is going to consume my entire soul, as it already has started, even before i've made my final decisionl! I need to remember to LIVE while i am trying to create another life. Thank you!!!

She is SO right! And the excellence continues long after you leave their building. I had my TR in 2002 and every time I have emailed Dr. B or a nurse, I have a reply with minutes. Literally, within minutes. I have 2 TR babies and have had 2 m/c in the last almost 8 years. I have had 100% complete support from them any time I needed it. This is truly an EXCEPTIONAL practice. This should be the standard for all medical care! Jo Ann

Tubal Ligation and Tubal Ligation Reversal

The tubal reversal doctors at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center explain tubal ligation and the procedure of tubal ligation reversal to repair the fallopian tubes. Many women who have a tubal ligation will later regret it and want to become pregnant again. Few are aware of the option of tubal ligation reversal. This is unfortunate because tubal reversal is both affordable and highly successful at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center.

Quoting the Tubal Ligation Reversal Blog:

"Tubal ligation is a surgical procedure that blocks the fallopian tubes to prevent pregnancy. Many people commonly refer to tubal sterilization as having their ‘tubes tied’. The more correct medical term is tubal occlusion (occluding or closing the tube), because not every fallopian tube is ligated or tied when it is closed. There are many different ways to perform a tubal ligation, but all the procedures cause some destruction of the fallopian tubes. There are many ways to perform a tubal ligation: tying and cutting, cauterizing (burning) and clipping or banding the fallopian tubes are the most common techniques.

Tubal Ligation: A Common Surgical Procedure

Tubal ligation is a very common surgical procedure in the United States. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention investigated surgical sterilization in 1995 and discovered 10.6 million women in the US had a tubal ligation procedure. Tubal ligation was twice as common as vasectomy. The study also found 1 out of 4 women desired a tubal ligation reversal at some point in their lives.

Tubal Ligation Reversal

A large number of women will regret their decision to have a tubal ligation and want to have another baby. According to the CDC study of 1995, more than 2.5 million women in the US will want to have their ‘tubes untied’. Many of these women are unaware that tubal ligation reversal exists, or they may be told that treatment by in vitro fertilization (IVF) is their only option. Most of these women will abandon hope of becoming pregnant again.

Untying Fallopian Tubes

Just as the expression of having the ‘fallopian tubes tied’ is commonly misused, the description of ‘untying your fallopian tubes’ has also become a frequently used, but inaccurate description of what actually occurs during tubal surgery to repair blocked tubes. More accurate terms for this type of surgery are tubal ligation reversal or tubal reversal. There are several ways to repair fallopian tubes after a sterilization procedure. Tubotubal anastamosis is the most common technique for performing tubal ligation reversal surgery. These illustrations show the method of tubotubal anastomosis (also called tubal anastomosis or tubal reanastomosis).

Tubal ligation involves closing the fallopian tubes by destroying a portion of the fallopian tube, which causes the tube to heal closed. Tubal ligation reversal involves opening and rejoining the closed ends of the fallopian tubes. This procedure is done under magnification using microsurgical techniques and is very successful in allowing women to become pregnant. When performed by the tubal reversal doctors at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center, 70% of women will become pregnant after a tubal ligation reversal.

Tubal Reversal Cost

We provide affordable tubal reversals at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center. We specialize in outpatient microsurgical tubal ligation reversal. We annually perform over 800 reversal surgeries every year and patients travel from across the United States and the world to have tubal ligation reversal at our center. We have developed special techniques to allow tubal reversal surgery to be affordable, safe, and highly effective. Our tubal reversal pregnancy rates, tubal reversal pregnancy testimonials, and patient satisfaction messages are testaments to our leadership in the field of tubal ligation reversal surgery."

Body Mass Index (BMI) Requirements For Tubal Reversal Surgery

Members of the Chapel Hill Tubal Message Board discuss Body Mass Index (BMI) and tubal reversal surgery. "When I get my BMI down to 35, I will be able to have tubal reversal surgery." Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center requires a BMI of less than 35, for optimal patient safety. Studies have shown that obesity causes increased risks for surgical patients, including anesthesia and wound healing complications. Other possible risks include deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary problems. Optimal Patient Safety is of our utmost concern.

For me, I feel the need to make it public, because seeing it there where others are seeing it too makes me more accountable. But that is my personal choice.
Let's make it another great day!

lol Shannon, I wish I figured out the trick to PMS and cravings!! I can't even eat lately and I just keep gaining

Posted by Brandi (Member # 3653) on April 16, 2008 07:30 PM:
Shannon, I don't know how true this is but I read that taking magnesium suppliments will help. Apparently we are low during that part of the cycle so we crave chocolate because it is loaded with magnesium.
I just try to eat healthier snacks. Eating nuts about 20 minutes before a meal makes you feel satisfied sooner so you won't pig out as much. About 12 almonds 20 mins, before a meal or if you are feeling like eating everything in site.

Posted by Brandi (Member # 3653) on April 16, 2008 07:37 PM:
Karen, I'm not a doctor but I would think if you're eating healthy and getting the proper amount of calories, watch your salt intake etc, and do what every exercise your doctor recommends, you may drop some weight and be healthier when the baby is born than you are now. I suggest speaking with your doctor and see what he has to say. He's better educated and you shouldn't start any kind of diet or exercise program without talking to him first anyway.
I hope you have a happy healthy pregnancy. Let us know what your Dr says.

Hello ladies! Make sure and let me know when you need your info updated. I lost two more pounds! I still am having a hard time making exercise priority, but I am being so so careful about what I eat!
Do this eat fresh. Concentrate on natural foods like fresh vegetables and fruits. Also, try to choose food that is bright and colorful, such as strawberries, blueberries, red and yellow peppers, etc. There are plenty of these foods that you could fill up on and would never cause you to gain! I know, I know, they don't exactly taste like chocolate, but the more you eat them, the more you want to eat them.
Here's a trick I use to tame snacking...put your favorite grapes in the freezer, and when you need a snack, these are great! They retain all their flavor, and when frozen, taste much like a popsicle. Best of all, they are so cold, you have to eat them slowly!
Keep it up ladies! Brandy, thanks for all the cute videos I love the exercising dogs, lol!!!!

Hi ladies....well I weighed and only lost one pound. I'm ok with that....it's better than gaining. I didn't get off my butt and exercise this week, but I will do better this week.
As for the fad diets, they just don't work. you may drop some pounds fast but when you stop that diet the weight will come back and then some. Why not go ahead and just eat healthy and exercise. There are no 3 day or miracle fixes.
Hope everyone has a good weekend.

Exercised this week...walked my 2 miles of hills everyday. But with AF due in 3 days, weighed in today and 1 pound down. I will admit...didn't eat the best everyday due to cravings. Tried to get all my fruit and veggies in though!! The ice cream shop in town opened and it was 70 here yesterday. Of course, we had to go, but I was good! Instead of getting my normal waffle cone full, I got a baby cone! I was proud of myself!
Water is a HUGE help!! Make sure you get your water EVERYDAY!!

Great job! We just have to keep the pounds coming down, even if it is 1 pound at a time!
My exercise goal for this week is to walk on the treadmill 1 mile every evening.
Tip for the day check labels for sodium, and use table salt sparingly. Too much sodium makes us retain excess fluids, and keeps that pound or two from coming off!

Greetings to all of you absolutely wonderful women, I must start off this way because I have first visited this website on Sunday and feel that I am addicted, I have gone through most of the Waiting Room mail and have been so encouraged.
I came upon the weight lost support while going to the next thread (I started reading from WR 4? and start from the last page and come all the way to one than do that for each page).
I don't know any of you but I believe that what we did in haste (TL) for some of us has brought so many beautiful, compassionate people together, and I applaud you all for coming together and helping one another.
Let me say that I love writing but I will do my best to make this brief and post again another time.
I am 39/40this year, DH 43, DS 18, DS 16 and wanting twins a boy n girl would be great (I know you are listening God) I had my TL in 1991; I am 5'6 1/2 n weigh 280, BMI is 43.6.
I had lost 40lbs b4 when I remarried in 2005 by eating 6 times a day and being in the gym twice a day but walking lots, so I know that I can do it again. I don not drink lots of water because I was told by a Chinese herbalist that too much water effects your liver (Like water log) that is for those that have a problem with water retaintion).
I have not even booked yet all talked to anyone at the clinic, but you all have inspired me just by your fellowship.
Hope not to long will post again, really enjoying reading, I am in England by the way and will be making the trip once the weight is 3/4 down.

I just wanted to say that a lot of times for women some of the weight is water retention so I drink lots of tea and cranberry juice because they are both natural diuretics and will help with that. Be prepared to pee a lot though. Just trying to help. I wish you all the best of luck.

Hello Ladies,
Thank you all so much for your support, it makes a lot of difference when you have people that can relate to what you are dealing with.
I went cycling this morning for about 30 mins and felt good except for that certain part of my anatomy that is too big for a little bike seat so I am a little sore down there if you know what I mean. lolol, but I will live.
I have lost 20lbs before so I know that I am capable but let me just share with you some of the things that helped me. HTH someone.
I had to eat 6 times a day to build my metabolism.
I started at the gym by 5:30 mornings and after working out for an hour I had a protein shake from the gym most mornings or hot oatmeal (Fiber is important it keeps you regular).
by 10 I would have a piece fruit (banana, apple any fruit even the banana chips) and chex mix.
by 12:30 1:00 I was having lunch which I would bring from home of dinner the night before (this saves from spending unnecessary money)
about 3:00 it was a snack again
5:30 dinner and then sometimes a snack after if I ate before 5:00 because I really tried not to eat after 6:00 because it really does not give us much time to work it off before preparing for bed. and if I did eat after 6:00 it was popcorn and hot chocolate or green tea.
the tricks were to only drink water and green tea no sweetener at all. (now this is not the best tasting but green tea helps you to loose weight, it is good for you and cleans you out so I drank it before all of my main meals.
And I ate all of the same foods that I used to eat (this is lifestyle so it needs to be something that you can do for the rest of your life); I just ate more often and smaller portions.
Because I used to retain water I cut out adding salt to my food unless it was an ingredient that was needed.I started using garlic which is good for your blood pressure and so many other things.
I used to eat nuts and raisins as a snack and whenever I had snacks I would always fill a paper cup and when the cup was empty of that particular snack than that was it until the next snack time.
Don't know if this has been helpful but it worked for me.

Congrats to everyone on their hard work.
bygodsgrace thank you for sharing your plan and tips with us. It is always helpful to see what others are doing.
I didn't weigh in on Fri because AF was in town and it was pointless, but I will be weighing in this coming Friday. I may start going to the gym again, but I'd really rather save the money. I have a treadmill here at the house if I would just get off my butt and use it.
Keep up the good work everyone!!!

I have been doing pretty much the same as below...I cut out all soda...all bad junk food and no greasy food...I do give myself one day a week to cheat..but my last cheat day we decided to go to Burger King...well all the grease from the fries gave me very bad diarrhea..sory TMI...so I can safely say that I won't be doing that again...which should help...I have one year to go before my TR we are planning on going next April....for a combination birthdays/anniversary trip...our 3rd anniversary will be March 25, and our bdays are April 30 and May 6...so that should be a wonderful trip...well keep up the good work ladies and WE CAN DO THIS...

Hello Ladies,
Hope all is well with you, I have been pretty busy with this working out business. I believe I have been doing well. (anyone that can get up at 5:30 in the morning when it is raining to cycle to the gym is doing great.
I think that my downstairs has adjusted to the bike seat. I cycle for 1015 minutes each day to go to the gym which I started officially on Thursday and have been working out for an hour and then riding back home to take a shower and prepare for work.
I have also downloaded the GI Index Tables so that I can check the foods which are low in fat and pick from there what I like and eat that.
It has not been too bad because I am not depriving myself of foods that I like, there are foods on there that I can live off and be happy and I am eating 45 times a day and I am genuinely full.
I decided to walk home from work today, it took me about 45mins; I was carrying at least 7pds on my back so I was not a happy camper but I made it, thank God.
I will weigh in next Thursday just to see how I am doing but will not do another weigh in for about two weeks after that.
I am already feeling like I have lots more energy, I think it is all the cycling.
So come on ladies it is spring time lets get to walking, jogging, swimming, dancing to get that weight off and keep in mind two very important things;
1. Your health with or without this operation is important, we are not getting younger.
2. We want to be able to play with our children and keep up with them when they start running off around the mall.
So be encouraged, put your mind into it and everything else will follow.

Shannon!!! It's almost here for you! How exciting! I have 79 days, and still have GOT to lose those 14 pounds...so I made a firm decision that I will walk 2 miles every morning, and try to get in another 2 miles every eveniing. I hate to put the treadmill in the living room, but, that's where we all hang out, so this way I can still be with everyone AND get my exercise in! I got my 2 miles done this morningso if you have a second to send good thoughts my way, I sure would apprecite it!
I have an appointment with an OB on May 23, and will have the Dr. fill out the weight and height verification form and order my bloodwork...so I really have 2 and a half weeks to try to get my BMI down to pretty close to where it needs to be.
I have friends in a health promotion office, and used their machine last week to check my weight, height and BMI, and it told me my BMI was 34but I think it measured from where my hair was fluffed up, instead of the top of my head lol...
But it seems like Dr. office scales always weigh you heavier!!! Anyway this is do or die time for me...wish me luck!

I'm stuck, I think it may have something to do with my dr taking me off my metformin to do all my PCOS testing. Now that it's completely out of my system my weight is creeping upwards even though I'm eat healthy etc. I'm still waiting for my results from my glucose tolerance test to find out if I need to go back on the meds. I don't have any weightloss to report right now, but hopefully I'm just in a funk and it will pass.

I think he forget that I'm his wife and one of the guys. Boy am I sore. I told him that I rather take on labor than the workout plan he have me on anyday. LOL!! He does workout with me. To see him workout make me think about the baby dance. LOL!! Sorry, maybe TMI for you. I don't think I could do this without having support in the gym and out. If you can get someone to help push you at the gym and remind you why we are doing this when it gets ruff. I think we'll make it. This is just my opinion. Good luck everyone. I know you can do it.

Welcome to our little group KimBE!
OK, so I have to tell you ladies, this walking is kicking my rump! I have been faithful to walk my 2 miles in the mornings, and have gotten 1 and 1/2 or more each evening. I have not weighed in yet, because I want to give my body a chance to really respond to this...but I can tell you this (((drum roll)))......I am wearing pants today that I have not been able to wear in a while! Yay!!!
If any of you are also walking, wouldn't it be cool if we kept track of the total number of miles we all walk? For example, since I started, I have walked 14.5 miles, and if any of you keep track, you can add that to mine... just an idea.
Keep up the good work girls, we can do this!!

Hi ladies,
I would like to join your group if I may. I'm not scheduled yet, due to financial situation, but I'm hoping for about a year from now (I wish sooner). I really need to lose weight, not only for TR but for my health. I haven't really started anything yet, but I think if my info was posted it would give me more reason to work at it. I joined a Prism weight loss group a few years ago and I lost 50 pounds in 5 months. The weekly meetings and weighins every 6 weeks really kept me on track. Then I had to quit because I couldn't afford it any more. I just don't have much success trying to do it on my own.
I know that when I get weighed at the doctor's office it always is at least 5 pounds more than my scale says at home, but for now I will give you my weight from home. I weigh 203 and my BMI is 35.7. I would like to lose at least 20 pounds, hopefully more.
Thanks and good luck to all!

What is the ideal wieght or it is strictly BMI?

Posted by beebeekinsers (Member # 12115) on May 09, 2008 07:16 AM:
Good morning! Well, I weighed in this morning, and I'm 2 pounds down! Nice to see a different number, it's been stuck for about 3 or 4 weeks.
Welcome to our thread brenda0704!! Linda, they go purely by your BMI, which could be unfortunate if you happen to be very muscular...I've heard that Arnold Schwartzenegger would be considered "obese" according to his BMI because of muscle mass. Having said that, I can't say that muscle mass is my problem...
Is everyone drinking their water? It is essential!!! Have a great losing day! Let's make it count!

Ya'll need to try this: When you are having your height measured, stand up as straight and tall as you can I mean really stretch! Maybe you do this already but for some reason, I didn't think to do this before. Anyway, it gives me another full inch! This makes a great impact on your BMI. And, the walking twice a day has really made a change for me. I was stuck for three weeks at the same weight, even though I was being very careful about what I ate. Now, I am breaking out of that plateau. Two pounds lighter yesterday, another pound this morning...
Sorry so long, but thought I would share this little tip, I hope it helps someone! Have a great losing day! Make it count!

Hello everyone! I wanted to tell you all about this really different diet that I have been doing. I have done it in the past and have lost like 30 pounds on it but the name is sometimes offensive. It is called fatloss for idiots. It really does work. You do it for 11 days and then you have three days off. My fist cycle, I lost 10 pounds (and they tell you 9) then I had my three days off (went a little nuts) and gained back 2 pounds but on my second cycle, I lost another 7 so it put me at 15 pounds total. I am currently on it again because I want to lose 20 pounds and my work has this program called "get healthy" and if you participate and jump through the hoops then you benifit payment literally are cut in half. So, Just wanted to tell you all about it. You can find it online. You have to pay for it to subscribe but once you have it, it is your for life. I purchased mine in jan 2006 and I was suprised that I was still able to get on it. I'm not by any means advertising for it. I just wanted to tell you all about it.

Posted by beebeekinsers (Member # 12115) on May 15, 2008 04:18 PM:
Where is everyone?
Thanks for the tip Penny can I ask how much does that diet cost? I actually have been using Slim Fast for 2 meals a day for about a week or so, just because I really had to get my BMI under the limit. I still have 10 weeks before surgery, so I can continue to work on losing more.
I have heard that being "obese" can make it harder to conceive. If I am going to the expense of having the TR done, then it seems logical to get weight off so I can actually conceive when the time comes.
Please let me know when you need to have your weight and BMI updated!

Hello ladies!
If it would be OK i would love to join in here , I have come a long way on my journey to lose this extra weight and become healthier and to be able to have a baby with my now husband, Last July 2007 when we got married I weighed in at 294 and sense then I have lost 49 pounds so far and I now weigh 245!!! I am 5'9" and 34 years old and right now the chapel hill BMI calculator says my BMI is 36.2 at this weight. and it shows when I lose 10 more pounds and get my weight down to 235 my BMI will then be 34.7 which will put me right below where I need to be to be able to have my TR!!... I Am So Excited to have come this far!!

The diet costs 39 dollars and then you have it for life. I bought it in 2006 and I go on it and then I'm off for a while and then go back on it when I need to take some pounds off. but the website is the name fatloss4idiots then it is dot com. I just thought that it might help a little.

Hi there Jennifer!!
Nice to see you over on this thread!
I can't wait until I am all healed up so I can start walking again! That's what works for me...I try to walk 2 miles a day. The road we live on is nothing but big hills in either direction, so I really get a workout! I also drink A LOT of water. I am a sweetaholic/ice creamaholic, so I really am trying to cut back!! Although while we were in CH, we had the BEST carrot cake delivered by room service!! YUMMY!!
I find I do ok if I substitute the fat free/sugar free pudding in when I need a fix...put some light coolwhip on it....not bad!! Then I got some good recipes from Weight Watchers for "sweet" snacks too that are great!
Hope everyone has a great week!!! Keep Moving!

Hi Shannon yeah I have a bowflex treadclimber my DH got me for Christmas and I bought the 30 day shred from the biggest loser and it kicks my butt I actually just got finished with that Im fixing to go walk 1 mile. I just have a hard time fitting everything into my day. But I will def just to amp up my workout and eating habits though I would love to be 175 when I go to CH, but we will see. Im working as hard as I can at it and thats all I can do staying motivated is my biggest thing I thought once I scheduled my TR maybe it would not be as hard but its been a little rough. Anyways I will keep everyone posted on my progress. Jennifer in NC

Pennylane I went to that website that you had mentioned, and I bought it (SHOCKER) LOL. Anyways it seems very reasonable and not hard at all. Im hoping this will work for me and help give me some motivation to continue working toward my weight loss goal not only for the tr but for me being a better and healthier person all around. I will let everyone know my progess I got my diet today from the diet generator but Im actually not going to start until sat after I go get alot of the fresh fruit and veggies. Im so excited to start this diet and see where things go.
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE ON THIS JOURNEY I HOPE YOU ALL ACCOMPLISH YOUR GOAL!

Hi Jennifer,
I will be happy to add you to the list! Weight loss takes some time, so I only update when someone lets me know their numbers have changed.
I'm doing the same as others walking and drinking water! I haven't had a soda pop in so long! The funny part is that I don't really miss it! I thought I would.
For now I am doing Slim Fast for two meals a day, cause I am just BARELY under the limit on BMI for my TR, and I want to be under far enough that I won't be nervous about it.

Louise I totally understand me too I am also just barely under the BMI requirement and I figured up I am going to just getting AF or just getting over AF when I go in Aug for my tr and I totally dont want that to throw me off. I want to be so under the limit that even if the scale showed a 5 pound gain I would be ok.
Shannon I will def keep you all posted it seems like it is going to be really easy to follow but then again who knows.

Hi to everyone, I am just getting started on my road to TR. I had my TL in Feb 96 and now I am going to schedule within the next month or so. I am concerned, however that I will be over the BMI limit. I am 5' 5" and 221 pounds, I used the calculator and I show I am right on the edge. How far under, do I NEED to be in order to have the surgery?
Thanks to anyone who can help.

Posted by hopefulin2008 (Member # 11297) on May 20, 2008 04:20 PM:
valwoman your BMI must be below 35 anything above 34.9 on the day of surgery, and they will have you to reschedule. Good luck on trying to lose the weight I myself and having to lose some weight. Any idea when you may schedule and with what Dr? Your more than welcome to come and join us in the waiting room part 56, its for ladies who are scheduled and those who have not and from time to time ladies who have done had their tr will chime in and answer any questions we may have. Good luck no matter where this journey leads you. Jennifer in NC TR 8/4/08

Wowour list is getting long!
Louise, you are doing greatlosing fast. I haven't really kept track of anyone else, but I hope you are all losing too. My family and I have been walking a lot lately, since the weather has been nice. But it got cold again yeterday and it's raining today, so we might not be walking. Hopefully the weather will improve soon. Keep it up, ladies!

Just wondering what weights are you ladies using, and how often to you weigh yourself? I weight first thing in the morning after I go to the bathroom I seem to weight less in the mornings, and I get discouraged if I weigh 200 one morning and then 205 the next should I be fluckating (sp) that much in one day and should I weight like every fri or something... Just wondering.

Jennifer,
I only weigh in once a week, and make sure it is the same time of day every week!
Weight fluctuates quite often during the day...it gets very discouraging if you weigh too often!!
HTH!!

Thanks Shannon your right it def gets discouraging at times, sometimes I think what the heck am I pushing myself for if I cant see any results, but I know its worth it.
Pennylane on that diet you were talking about I did the diet generator and I have a question since you have done it before I was hoping you would be able to answer this question. If it says that I can eat chicken and cashews do I have to eat just that or can I add like something to it like veggies and if it says turkey and an apple can that be like a turkey sandwhich?

Hello Again Ladies ,
I just wanted to chime in on the BMI Question that I Seen on here and let everyone know that I Myself was told by Dr Berger and i think it was his Nurse Julie that when i get my BMI down to 35 that it would be fine and i would be able to have the surgery as long as it is not over 35. so i am a bit confused as to why some people are being told that there BMI has to be Below 35.. am i misunderstood about something?

Darkfeary, if you have been told that you can have surgery at 35 BMI, then I'm sure you can. Here's why ladies are saying UNDER 35 (copied and pasted from the "Scheduling" tab of the CHTRC web site:
For maximum safety in the outpatient surgery setting, our policy requires patients to have a body mass index (BMI) of less than 35 at the time of surgery. BMI is based on height and weight and can be determined by using our BMI calculator.
The main thing to keep in mind is that if our weight is too high when we get there, they will have to reschedule, and nobody wants that to happen. I am coming all the way from Oklahoma, so it would be a tragedy if DH and I made the trip by plane, and then couldn't get the TR done!
I've got my eyes on the prize! I've tried dieting many times over the years, but I must say, I have never had quite so good an incentive as now! Not only will the weight loss make me an acceptable candidate for TR, but healthier for PG'cy.
We can all do this together, and I am thankful for all you ladies who are in this journey with me!

I had wondered how much different the Dr. office scale would be from mine at home, and to my surprise, it was a pound lighter! I also made sure to stretch as straight and tall as I could, and came up to 5'2"...so according the Weight & Height Vereification form, my official BMI is 34.2. This is so encouraging for me, especially since I have a good 8 weeks until surgery still to continue losing weight and another few weeks after that before we bgin TTC.
I hope everyone has a great "losing" day today!! And enjoy the Memorial Day weekend! I may even treat myself to a hamburger...

It seems like the scale at the doctor's office always weighed me about 5 pounds more than my scale at home, so I better make sure I'm well below the limit at home before I go to get weighed there!

Posted by darkfeary474 (Member # 11949) on May 23, 2008 04:31 PM:
Yes that is my plan also, even though Dr.Berger told me that with my height of 5'9" and weight at 235 would be fine with my BMI right at 35 to have the surgery, I was to get my weight down to at least 230 before I even make the appointment call ... my goal is to ultimately get my weight down to 200 and that will come in time but i do not want to wait till then to have my TR done because I am 34 and a Type 2 Diabetic (I have my Diabetes Under Control) and want to have my TR surgery done before I turn 35 which will be in April 2009.

OK, it's Friday and I am trying to weigh myself and post it every Friday, so I weighed myself today, and it was 197.5. I'm hoping this is right, because it seems like a lot lost in a small amount of time. My scale is a digital one, and I think it might need a new battery, because it's been kind of acting up. The first two times I weighed myself and posted it was just before and just after my period, so maybe I weighed a little more because of that. My husband works at the local hospital, and he has been weighing himself there, and he said our scale weighs him one pound less that the hospital's. So, I'm not sure if it's right, but according to my scale, my weight is 197.5, which makes my BMI 34.7. I plan to get myself weighed and measured at the doc's office soon, so I'll correct my stuff then if I have to.
Thanks,
Brenda
