Pregnancy is possible after Essure reversal

Although the manufacturer of the Essure device states it is not reversible, the tubal reversal doctors at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center have successfully removed Essure coils from women wishing to become pregnant again. Pregnancy after Essure reversal is possible.

Hello all,
I have been reading the message boards for a couple weeks now and I would like to thank all of you for sharing your stories. It makes me feel good to know that I am not the only one who now longs for a baby after my decision to sterilize. I have not seen any posts about women having the Essure reversed (removed) and I thought it would be a good idea to share my story.

I had the essure done in November 2006. At the time I thought it was the right thing to do and now nearly 3 years later I regret having done the procedure. I am schedule with Dr. Berger on August 26, 2009 to have Essure reversal. I am hopeful that I will become pregnant again.

Hello 11Needles,

What is the Essure?? I haven't heard of that. I to am scheduled August 26th with Dr. Monteith. See you then!

It is a procedure where they put small metal coils in fallopian tubes to create scare tissue to block your tubes. It is an outpatient procedure that is an alternative to the traditional TL. I do believe there is a page on this web site that explains it better than I do. ha ha

I was surfing the net (yet again) to see if I could find any bfp for an essure reversal and I came across a site that report tube lenghts of Left: 12cm Right: 9cm - after an essure reversal. I don't understan how that can be. I know Dr. Berger has only done a couple essure reversals but I was under the impression that the lengths would be shorter than the average TR length??

Posted by AnitaA68 August 14, 2009 08:57 PM:

Well then I think that person had above average tubal length because the average uncut tube length is 10cm.

I am so excited, my surgery is in 4 weeks...well 3 weeks and 6 days...but who's counting right? LOL!!
With the initial conversations with the staff they are all wonderful and caring professionals.
My husband and I look forward to the possibility of a baby after the Essure procedure is reversed.

Rsatterson, congratulations!! Glad that you have scheduled yout apt. I am hoping that Dr Berger can make it work. My coils are not visable in my uterus so I am so scared. How long ago did you have your procedure done?

Hello 11 Needles & RSatteson,

First, I want to thank you for posting here. I also had the Essure procedure- 10/2006. My PTLS has been so horrific that I sought out Dr B and have placed a deposit to also have a reversal. I am thinking that I will either have the reversal this fall or next spring.

I would love to hear as many details as each of you are willing to share regarding recovery from the procedure and also recovery from PTLS.

My story is this: I am a married MD. I am in my thirties and I am luckily in a "lifestyle specialty" (I work 50 hour weeks instead of 80). As I am a resident physician still in training, there are only certain times of the year that I can take time off to have the reversal. I have also been hesitant because, well I have scrubbed into too many surgeries gone wrong. So, I know that sometimes even the procedures that should not be too complicated can so south, and quickly. That said, the overwhelming majority of surgeries like this are successful and without complications. So, I had a threefold approach when deciding to sign up with Dr Berger: first, I prayed a lot. Second, I did a lot of my own research on the surgery and the available surgeons at this time. Last, I waited and hoped my PTLS would improve.

As far as why I choose Dr B- it came down to his obvious experience in this field. I called the other provider's office (who currently offers the Essure reversal) and was told that the current length of time under general anesthesia would be four hours. Dr Berger is able to do this reversal in approximately one to 1.5 hours (this is what I was told when I spoke with one of his nurses, and as he does not charge any more than for a regular tubal, I assume it to be true- OR time = money). The price was also considerably higher with the other provider. So, the bottom line is that I wanted for myself the most experienced surgeon I could obtain, and I feel that I have found that in Dr Berger.

Regarding the PTLS, it hasn't gone away. I was more than willing to loose the deposit on the procedure- in the hope that it would magically vanish and I would not loose myself 5 -7 days out of the month. So, now that I am three years poost- Essure, I feel confident that having the reversal is worth the risks of surgery. I only hope that the PTLS begins to subside and quickly! As for babies- perhaps now I am ambivalent about that more than the past, but that is not the primary reason I am seeking out this reversal. It is PTLS.

I hope you are recovering well 11 needles. Thanks again for initiating this post. Please keep us updated on your recovery!

ashtangi , you have found the right doctor and facility. CHTRC is a private surgical center where Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith perform 4-5 surgeries/day Monday - Friday. Tubal Reversal is their focus and thus, they are continually adjusting and improving the surgical and recovery experience. Both doctors are very progressive and appreciate patient suggestions. The surgery only lasts 1- 1 and 1/2 hours. Look forward to having you at the center.

ashtangi,
Well I am back at work today (5 days after surgery) I have a desk job and manage a group of 18 people. I feel GREAT!!! I didn't tell anyone at work that I was having surgery and no one has noticed that I went through surgery. as far as PTLS although I was never diagnosed with it I believe that Essure is the result of some of the problems I have been experiencing since I had it done in November 2006. the Main issue is Anemia. I take Iron 3 times a day during my cycles and one pill a day the rest of the time and my blood levels are still low. At this point I am tired of being tired (if that makes sense). I feel really good an am very happy that I had the reversal. You are in excellent hands with Dr Berger. After the surgery my tube lengths are both 9 cm YEAH!!!! I will keep you posted with my progress. If you have any questions at all please let me know. I am happy to share experience with you. . . . Thank you.

11 Needles, In God's Hands & Jan,

Wow, thanks for the awesomely quick replies to this thread.

I think it may be of benefit to others in the future, and it has already been helpful to me.
11 Needles: Glad to hear that you are doing so well! Without disclosing too much identifying information, can you please share this with me: what would you describe as your overall "physical condition" prior to the surgery: physically fit, average, overweight, etc... The reason I ask is that I would be curious to hear how well you are recovering. General physical condition has a direct reflection on how quickly folks tend to recover after surgery. Considering the fact that you are just 5 days post- op and going back to work, I take that to be a great sign overall.

I intend to give myself at least a week off, and will shoot for more like seven full post-op days before I return. I also intend to do a whole lot of preventative- holistic interventions (mainly, fish oil, a great multi vitamin, MSM ( a MUST for healing tissues), zero refined foods, no alcohol, and some good old carrot juice and wheatgrass juice. Yes, I am a health- food nut. I am very into healthy living and taking care of myself. Ironically, I think this has contributed to the PTLS- my theory is that my overall state of health tilted me towards localized rejection of the Essure coils- because I am so otherwise well...

So, I am curious how you are feeling in relationship to how you would expect to feel considering your overall health status and prior to the surgery.

Also, I would LOVE to hear if your anemia and fatigue improve. My body literally shuts down a few days prior to menses now, something it just did not do before Essure. Please keep us posted on how and if you feel a "return to normalcy" over the next few months. Also, are you needing to take much medication for the pain? Hopefully not...THANKS!

Congrats on the 9CM tube length. Very nice indeed.

Jan- if you read this... how long post Essure can one resume both exercise and/or sex? I am specifically going to target healing well in order to prevent adhesions... not that "I" really have anything to do with it... I know it is up to God. But as a doctor, you know that I know too much and I just dread the thought of developing adhesions. So, I want to follow all the "rules" and heal well.

In God's Hands- If you want any info on my PTLS, I will gladly share with you!

Thanks everyone here for sharing.
It is MUCH appreciated!

ashtangi,
I would say that I am average, 5ft 6in (although Erica RN would say i am 5ft 5in) [Wink] about 130. . . I try to exercise but don't like to. I think I am just lucky. This is my second Major surgery this year (had my thyroid removed in January-nothing wrong with the functionality but had two large nodules in it). I don't take vitamins. . .my diet. . . let me put it this way, there is nothing wrong with eating ice cream for breakfast. . . it has MILK! As far as how I expected to feel. . well I figured I would feel like crap afterward. Surprisingly I feel good. Yes I experiencing some pain but its more of an annoyance than anything and its not constant pain either. Before Essure I was pretty active. . single parent of two boys who play sports I would generally sleep about 2 to 4 hours a night my house was always clean and laundry always done. After essure I pretty much couldn't do anything. I began sleeping about 15 hours didn't want to do anything either. clean house, take kids places, I pretty much became a home-body.

Natural pregnancy is possible after Essure removal, Read Essure reversal patient Michelle's experience  proof that all of the above are possible.

Choosing The Most Experienced Tubal Reversal Doctor

Tubal Reversal Message Board Member, Rajsan04, comes to the board with questions and concerns about choosing a tubal reversal doctor with the most experience and financing her reverse tubal procedure. For the most successful tubal reversal surgery, it is important for the doctor to have performed at least 500 tubal reversals and that he or she is reversing tied tubes daily. Dr. Gary Berger has performed over 8000 tubal reversals and Dr. Monteith nearly 1000 reversal procedures. Experience is also an important indicator on whether reversal surgery will be performed if a woman has a difficult situation due to short tubes, missing tubal segments, fimbriectomy, or inherent diseases of the tubes. While most doctors would be unwilling – or unable - to perform a tubal reversal in one of these situations, Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith are able to repair the tubes in 98% of cases, regardless of the type of sterilization that has been performed. Dr. Berger pioneered this technique for outpatient tubal reversal surgery and the procedure takes approximately an hour. Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center is a specialty clinic for tubal ligation reversal and Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith are the only doctors in the US who limit their practice specifically to untying tied tubes. This experience has led to the most tubal reversal babies born worldwide.

Tubal Reversal Surgery or In Vitro Fertilization?

Is in-vitro fertilization or tubal reversal surgery better after tubes have been tied? Tubal Reversal Message Board Member writes about her experiences while considering IVF and sterilization reversal surgery. She is researching which of the two is the right choice to restore her fertility after her tubal ligation. Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center staff and other Tubal Reversal Message Board members offer their support and information. After researching her options, this member writes "We both feel very confident with Dr. Berger and his team." Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith are the only doctors in the US who limit their practice specifically to tubal reversal surgery. Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center is a unique medical facility exclusively for tubal ligation reversal; helping couples from all over the world realize their dream of having children after a tubal sterilization. With their surgical reversal experience tubal reversal can be a better option than IVF for many couples seeking more children after a tubal ligation procedure.

Hi, My name is Sandy and my husband and I have been married for 8 years and for the past few years we have been talking about having a baby. He has a daughter from a previous marriage and I have two sons from a previous marriage. We are both 39 and thought this would be the best time before its to late to get a tubal reversal and give it a try. I have my first appointment with an RE yesterday and I'm feeling very discouraged. I was assuming because this RE has many options for pregnancy, such as IVF , egg donation and tubal reversal, I was expecting him to be very supportive of our decision to have a tubal reversal and to have a child but he didn't sound like it! Before I had any examination he kept going on and on about my age and the risk of getting pregnant at my age. He was pushing me towards IVF (no way we could afford that) Luckily my health insurance covers the tubal reversal 100%, I am a state employee. I told him I'm aware of the risk but I would like to get the tubal. He didn't seem very happy about my decision and said, well lets exam you first..if I don't see many follicles or if they are in bad shape the tubal reversal wont even be an option! He seemed to be full of attitude the entire time and I felt a little uncomfortable to be honest. While my feet was up and ready to be examined, the doctor made the comment "Your kids are grown now, you are out of the woods finally, why would you want to do this all over again? I was completely floored, I couldn't believe I was hearing this coming from someone who was suppose to be encouraging my chances of having another child! I didn't know quite what to say, I just kind of chuckled at his comment and kept quiet. So he starts to exam me, and here comes the problems! He jumps because he sees a polyp on my cervix the size of a walnut, which he removes right away. There was some heavy bleeding after that which he got to stop after about 10 minutes. He gives me the pap smear and pelvic exam, breast exam, then gets me ready for the ultrasound of my ovary's and uterus. The good news is, and at his surprise, I have many healthy cyst and follicles on my left ovary and also saw that I was ovulating! Which I already knew because I test for a surge everyday with OPK. I know that is probably ridiculous since my tubes are tied but I just wanted to see if some of my parts are still working and get use to the idea of checking for it every month when I do get the reversal. When I told him I detected a surge that same day he seemed annoyed that I was even checking! Anyways, here comes another problem! My right ovary has good follicles, not as many as the left ovary but he saw a shadow of some mass inside my right ovary. He looked at me and said, well your just full of surprises aren't you? I was freaking out at this point of course! Come to find out I have a dermoid cyst in my right ovary, those weird ones that contain teeth and hair, sometimes eyes and bone fragments. After the exam and my husband and I are back in his office all of a sudden he seems to be more encouraging about the tubal reversal (because of the shape and amount of follicles I have) but is trying to decide if I should get my cyst removed and tubal at the same time or have 2 separate surgeries. Also, my husband and I had intercourse within a 12 hour period of my exam so he checked for any signs of sperm and not that I had enough bad news to work with, he tells me he didn't see any signs of sperm at ALL. He said there was a possibility the large polyp blocked it from getting to the point he had checked but he would need to get his semen checked before we go any further with anything. So he has an appt. to do that on Friday. Before leaving the doctor told me the tubal reversal surgery was not a walk in the park, I would practically be hanging upside down, blood rushing to my head for 4 hours and pressure put on my diaphragm, which wasn't good for me because I was over weight, so another thing, he suggest I lose at least 60 lbs before I have any surgery performed. I can lose the weight but just very discouraged about everything else, I was not happy when I left there, I was crying all the way home, my husband was driving feeling helpless for me, not sure what to say to me except everything was going to be okay. I get the results of the pap and polyp on Friday.

The reason I'm talking about all of this is because I'm so discouraged I feel like just giving up now. My husband and I want a child so much. I don't feel very encouraged to continue with all of this. I'm just not sure what to do. My husband wants to go all the way and try all our options. I wanted to try who seems to be very popular with tubal reversals, Dr. Berger in North Carolina, which is very close to me, I am in Virginia, but my insurance wont cover the expenses with him being in a different state, so I have no choice but to use this doctor. There are other RE's in Virginia but further away than he is but I'm willing to drive the distance if I have to. The RE I'm seeing right now has a good track record. He said his tubal reversals are successful but he is worried about the health of my eggs because of my age. I understand he is right in what he is saying but I wasn't very encouraging at all.

I know this is a lot to digest lol, just need some sort of advice here, not sure what to do, thanks!

Hi Sandy, I hope you've had a chance to catch your breath after that difficult office visit. Your age is not a factor but your reproductive health is... I would see what this RE comes back with as far as test results and then contact CHTRC for their opinion. I don't know about other clinics but I was never "hanging upside down" for my TR surgery, LOL!
There is a weight requirement for the surgery, it is based on BMI and you can find the details on this website to see where you fall within the range.
I hope you are able to sort this all out and move ahead with your TR. I promise that the staff at CHTRC will help you every step of the way, they are terrific at what they do!!
Take care and keep us posted

I wouldn't let him get to you. I am 40 at present and I am currently 31 week pregnant. I also had PTLS bad and had battled it for 19 years before having my TR done. I just can not begin to tell you how many uncaring doctors I have seen about the problems I was having before my TR. I had talked to a few doctors also about having a TR done before we made up our mind to have it done at CHTRC. If you have it it done I would go with CHTRC no matter the cost. That is their job every day and in my opinon they are the best at what they do. The last doctor that I had seen about having my TR done, before making the drive to NC. Told me that I would need to have a tubal implant done. Meaning that they would have to cut a hole in my uterus and putting the tube into that hole and stetch it in. I told this to Dr. M when he seen me the day of surgery. He told me not to worry and to let him figure that part out during surgery. When I woke up Dr. M said to me I did not need to do the implant and you have really good lengths on your tubes. When I had my surgery done last November. My DH was over seas. Two week after he came home. I got my first and only BFP for now. As I said I would go with the best right off the bat, no matter the cost. And please, please do not let the things that the RE said to you get to you. Most will always always try to push you to what will cost you the most money. Good luck, Sabrina OH yeah, by the way. Dr M didn't have me in surgery long enough to have me hanging up side down for 4 hours. I was in surgery maybe 1 hr and 15 mins before waking up in recovery. So you can chock that up as one lie that that doctor told you.

i had ivf 2 rounds first round my egg didn't form fully and second round i had 3 grade a embryo implanted and i had a miscarriage. your egg health is going to be the same with ivf or tubal with ivf they give you egg stimulating hormones and if needed after tr you can take clomid to increase your eggs. of course clomid cost 20 and ivf meds hundreds. tr surgery by dr at chapel hill are very easy to have and very easy to heal from so i would be scared to have a tr from a dr who is telling you that you will be hanging upside down blood rushing etc. tr surgery at chapel hill takes about an hour and there really isn't much pain involved. if you can afford to go to chapel hill you should. they take credit cards and have other payment options available. either way i hope everything goes well for you
oh yeh i am almost 37 and i have a 9month old daughter from tr now working on #2

Sandy, sweetie, you had an awful experience and I sure feel for you! Maybe you and your husband can look at your finances and find a way for Dr. Berger or Dr. Monteith to do your surgery so you're with someone who is encouraging and helpful. And they don't hang you upside down for four hours either My surgery in June took a little over an hour I believe, and I don't think Dr. Berger had me bat-ways at any point If going to CHTRC and paying out of pocket isn't financially realistic, then please look into the other REs in your insurance coverage availability, this guy sounds like he is not the right person for you if you left feeling hopeless and your husband felt helpless to comfort you. Just my opinion, but you deserve someone who will give you realistic information AND encouragement. Get a second opinion, and a third, and fourth...find the right person for YOU no matter what the distance My husband and I are from WI, and we never questioned going the distance to NC for great care, this was the right fit for us. Good luck hun, hoping you find the right fit for you and your husband soon

I'm sorry for the experience you had with that RE. I can tell you my surgery did not last 4 hrs. It was under 1hr. No surgery is a picnic so to speak but I did not have any problems. CHTRC took great care of me! They were the only ones I would consider for my TR and I have regrets! Please don't be discouraged!

Posted by rajsan04 (Member # 15108) on November 10, 2010 10:28 AM :
Thanks so much for your encouraging and supportive responses! I'm shocked that none of you were hanging upside down during the surgery lol. He told me several times during our meeting that I would be at an angle (not completely upside down) but enough of an angle that blood would be rushing to my head and pressure on my diaphragm. I forgot to mention that he said DEATH is always a factor in any surgery. I was like geezz! My husband and I can cover the cost for Dr. Berger, we can manage, just thought it was nice we wouldn't have to pay for it and we were lucky enough to have insurance to cover it 100%. But after that experience, I'm not the least bit worried about paying for it. I've wanted to see Dr. Berger or Dr. M before anyone and now I feel like they are the best for the job right now. But what about the Dermoid Cyst that has to be removed from my right ovary? Should I continue with this doctor to at least get the dermoid removed or find someone else to do it? I would like for my insurance company to at least cover the expenses of this surgery.

Dear Rajsan04: We frequently hear from potential patients that a local doctor performs reversals when, in fact, their expertise in in vitro fertilization (IVF). For tubal reversal surgery, it is important for the doctor to have performed at least 500 tubal reversals and that he or she performs this surgery daily. (Dr. Berger has performed over 8000 reversals and Dr. Monteith nearly 1000.) Experience is also an important indicator on whether surgery will be performed if a woman has a difficult situation due to short tubes, missing tubal segments, fimbriectomy, or inherent diseases of the tubes. While most doctors would be unwilling – or unable - to perform a reversal in one of these situations, Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith are able to repair the tubes in 98% of cases, regardless of the type of sterilization that has been performed. Pregnancy rates for our patients in your age group average 64%. Dr. Berger pioneered this technique for outpatient tubal reversal surgery and the procedure takes approximately an hour. The majority of patients return to work in 3-5 days and are back to the majority of normal activities within 7 - 10 days. Compare this to the operating and recovery times in other facilities, with less experienced doctors, where surgery takes 3 - 4 hours and patients may spend 2 - 3 nights in the hospital and have a 6 week recovery. Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith are the only doctors in the US who limit their practice specifically to tubal reversal surgery only. This means you will be with other women going through the same experience and will have a nurse and your doctor available 24/7 following surgery. I hope this is helpful. We do have a few appointments during November that are available at a discounted fee if you would like to contact me at JuliaS@tubal-reversal.net. Julia S., RN

Hi Sandy,
I am Heather(37) and live in Marion, Virginia. I had my TR surgery 5/12/10 much against dr advise also. I was told by 2 RE that I was too old and had too many abdominal surgeries 8 Before the tr!
Dr M did my surgery, and he said I was in better shape than he expexcted. As of today I am 10 weeks pregnant. It took only 4 ovulation cycles to conceive little bean. So far so good!
It is hard not to get discouraged but try not to. You do what you feel is best for you and your family. I do recommend CHTRC over any I looked into.
Oh, and if you dh SA is not as good as it should be, try Fertil- Aid ( get it from Babyhopes.com) My hubbys SA was pretty bad 10% motility..but after 6 months on it we were pregnant!!!
Don't give up hope and pray alot.
Baby dust to you and all trying!

Dear Rajsan04
WOW- ur appointment with the RE sounds a lot like how mine went and I too left there crying and feeling so discouraged... except I had already had my TR (by dr berger) before I went there but I was being seen by the RE because of a massive mass on my uterus that they found a month earlier when I had kidney stones... SO the Re is mad that ONE - I had the Tr done by someone else and when he found out it was Dr berger he became a total jerk to me and told me my odds where not good or ever conceiving and IVF would be my only hope. TWO- I have had endo my whole life and have had 7 surguries to remove it and this RE questioned if I had "really" ever had endo at all. I have all the symptoms and that was just too much of a red flag that I had been making it up my whole life... Told you he was a Jerk! Then he did the ultra sound and couldn't find the mass, there wasn't one to be found and refered to the Er dr's as stupid and didn't know what they were talking about... the exam he did he told me I was probably perimenopausal and just wasted all this money on a tr - where if I would have went with him he would have pointed me in the rigt direction instead of giving me false hope...
Left there crying - It had been 8 months since my TR and I had also already had an HSG to confirm my tubes were both open.. I emailed dr berger that night with questions and thngs this dr had told me... The funny thng was this RE had once applied for a job with Dr. Berger and I am SO SO SO glad Dr.Berger could see the type of guy this was and for what ever reasons this RE didn't get the job... I think that is why he was such a jerk to me once he found out I had had my Tr done by Dr. Berger. Dr Berger email me back with + thougts and things do and not to stress...... I became PG THAT cycle with my first TR baby!!!!! I am currently 27 1/2 weeks Pg with my second Tr baby.. Don't give up hope and DO NOT let this quack of an RE do your TR. Really you want the best go to Chapel Hill and have Dr. Berger or Dr. Monteith do your TR. This is what they do and teh only thing they do. Did you know for an extra $1,000 you have have them do a lap before the Tr - where they can take care and make sure everything looks good before the Tr? The day of My TR there was one Tr sister the day before that during her TR Dr. Berger noticed she had a hernia and took care of it, the day of my surgery there was another lady after me that also had something like that and he took care of that for her too... Chapel hill is teh only place I would go and know I am truley in good hands... As far as being 39 follow your heart and do whats best for you two... I say GO FOR IT...
DOn't lose faith nor hope!
Lots of Love

Hi, ladies. It is disheartening to hear that many of you have had what you consider "bad experiences" with various doctors. Health is extremely important, and we should all feel we can talk to and trust the doctors we depend on as a general rule. Of course, I can't speak to your specific situations since I was not there and don't know the doctors. But I can certainly vouch for Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith , as well as for the nurses and staff members here at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center. I am very proud to work in an establishment that puts patients first, and has so much emphasis on excellent care and patient safety. As you can see from other comments, the surgeons here are absolutely at the top of their field, and each surgeon does between 12 and 15 tubal reversal surgeries each week. Just to put your fears at rest, Rajsan04, nobody is ever "hanging upside down" during surgery with Dr. Berger or Dr. Monteith. The surgery is quick, there is very little blood loss, and patients recover quickly and are able to go rest in comfort at the hotel (rather than in a hospital). Rasjan04, please note that on the home page of this Web site there is a link that allows you to request a free DVD of Dr. Berger performing tubal reversal surgery. We encourage anybody who is considering TR and has questions about what happens during surgery to click the link and watch your video when it arrives. As you will see in the video, there certainly isn't any hanging upside down! I hope that helps ease any fears you have. Please, for all of you ladies, don't hesitate to keep sharing questions or concerns with us. We want to make your TR journey as smooth as possible. Julie B., RN

Hi Sandy my name is Jacque and I am very sorry to hear about the experience that you have had. I also had a very bad experience with RE and OB was told by RE that TR was not really and option for me due to 2 c-sections and having TL over 9 years ago. He told me that I would have too much scar tissue and it would not be very good idea to even consider it. He however was very willing to take my money for IVF . I also went to a OB in my area that does TR he told me that he would not do the surgery either that scar tissue would be too much and that it was a waste of time that I should have IVF. The thing is that me and my DH just wanted to have the oppurtunity to try to have a child on our own. The problem is that at every turn we felt shut down and like there was no hope. I sit here now having had my TR on September the 14th 2010. I will say this CHTRC gives back hope to thousands of women who have had their hope taken away from them. No one can tell you what is the right decision for you we can only tell you of the experience that we have all had and hope that this helps. Try not to give up or get discouraged. CHTRC has payment plans for saving up for the surgery. I was wondering if the doctor did a FSH test on you to tell you wether or not your eggs were good or not for all you know you could have more eggs than someone younger than you. Try not to give up hope and stay strong. Good luck to you in what ever decision that you choose and I hope that all goes well with you.

Jacque

Thank you Jacque and all you ladies for sharing your experiences and encouraging words. My husband and I talked last night for hours. I shared with him your replies to my message and emails. We both feel very confident with Dr. Berger and his team. Plus we are only 3 hours away! I also talked with my insurance company and because they do cover the cost of the tubal 100% and we are PPO, that they will reimburse the cost after the TR is done. Which of course is nice, but after what we have been through with the local RE and after hearing your experiences and the encouragement from the staff with Dr. Berger and Dr. M, it wouldnt really matter if we were to be reimburse or not! I am excited and honor to become apart of this journey with the rest of you and to share the bond of wanting this dream to happen for all of us. I will be spending the next 3 to 4 months losing the weight I need to lose. If anything is a motivator, it is this for sure! I look forward to letting all of you know I'm in Chapel Hill and ready to get my TR! Until then you will be in my prayers and thoughts! Love, Sandy

Choosing Where To Have Your Tubal Reversal

Women explain why they decided to go to Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center to have their tubes repaired.

An active topic on the Tubal Reversal Message board was started by 'WIMom27' who asked other women why they decided to go to Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center to have their tubes repaired. She gets a lot of responses such as these from 'tammyfromWI' who posts, "I was actually directed to CHTRC thru the UW-Madison's Infertility Clinic. They told me that it was well know all over the U.S and throughout the world. I could have had it done at the UW's clinic but they told me it would cost around $20,000 and have to do an inpatient stay. I talked to them for about five more minutes, came home, researched the website, and then made the call to CHTRC. I scheduled my surgery for 3/24/10. We decided to wait a couple months to TTC and in June started. We did end up with a BFP. It was a keeper. I'm currently 19 weeks pregnant and so happy with my decision to go with them. They do this everyday and know what they are doing." 'Yumenut' writes, "I flew to NC from Moscow Russia to have my surgery at CHTRC on 10/14/10. I don't regret one dime that we spent on the trip or the surgery. You can tell from the message boards and the information on this website that the entire staff cares about every patient." 'ChrisNbrian' follows up with, "I choose Chapel Hill ultimately because that is where my doctor recommended. He said that one of his associates does the TR but Dr Berger is less expensive and has a higher success rate. I just kept hearing my doctors words in my head telling me that reversals are all that CH does and Dr Berger is the best in the business!" In short, if you want the best chance of becoming pregnant after tubal ligation, go to Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center.

A couple of years ago when I first found CHTRC and started doing my research on TR, I might have already asked this question.... but, I am back to doing my research AGAIN and trying to really get all the info I can to make an informed decision! I am torn between deciding between 2 different TR facilities and just want to know how others made their decision to use CHTRC? How do you feel about your decision? What factors helped you make that decision? I just want to be absolutely sure I am making the right decision, because I cannot afford the time or money to do this more than once!

It would be to my surprise if you were able to find "1" person who didn't have the most upmost respect for the doctors and staff at CHTRC. You will not find any better care at any other facility. If you read on this message board, you will see the amazing stories that have taken place in many of our lives from the moment we left CHTRC a new woman, with the chance to conceive again. Every member of their staff truly cares about your well being and gives you the highest level of care. As you can see, I am a huge fan.

WImom27~ the question is~ This other doctor that you found, does he/she only do this surgery every day or do they do other things??? I know I would only want the best doing this surgery and in my opinion CH is the best!!!! I had my surgery on Thursday and feel great!!!! You will not be disappointed by going to CH!!! They really do care!!!

I chose CHTRC because I liked the statistics I saw for success on the site, everything you wanted to know was laid out right there for you, even the hotel and transportation to and from it, no stressful navigating in a foreign land, risking being late or anything else. If you have any questions, the staff are all super friendly, and if they don't have the answer, they get it for you and get back to you that day or the next day. I also like that they use out of office responses on e-mail, so if it's going to take some time to get back to you, you know what day that person will be back. I liked that the doctors' experience in the field was explained on the site, and that the doctors are accessable to the patients, it's not "Please contact my nurse who will talk to me for you." I liked that the payment options were affordable and easy to arrange. Everything you needed to know about before, during, and after was easy to understand, everything they needed was easy to get to them. I have not regretted our decision at all, I have had a few surgeries in my life, all the others locally, and this was, by far, the easiest, and it was done by people I'd never met, in a place I'd never been!! Hope this helps, good luck on making your decision and for a successful procedure!! ~Liz

I also live in WI, in Weston (just south of Wausau). We debated because NC was the farthest of the places that we researched but for many reasons, they seemed to be the best choice. My best friend is also a nurse so I asked her opinion. She was so impressed with the details, statistics, pictures, message board and care that was put into the website that she agreed that we should go to CHTRC. TR surgery is ALL that they do there and in my opinion, they have it perfected! After we sent our money, I kept thinking that it was too good to be true. On our drive I thought, what if we get there and it's a vacant lot?! Sure enough it was as wonderful as everyone says. You will not regret it...

I liked so much about CH but it just had the right feel. It came down to CH and a place in Georgia and frankly, CH just felt right. After coming to CH, having my TR and having so much history on the boards - I would tell anyone that this place is second to none.

I'm from Wisconsin too! (Appleton) I choose CH ultimately because that is where my doctor recommended. He said that one of his associates does the TR but Dr Berger is less expensive and has a higher success rate. I did lots of research looking at other places but kept coming back to CH. I just kept hearing my doctors words in my head telling me that reversals are all that CH does and Dr Berger is the best in the business! NJgirlinWI, my husband and I thought what if we show up and there is just this dumpy old run down building with a "doctor" standing at the door waiting to do the surgery. We actually kept joking about it the 2 days before surgery. (we arrived on Saturday and surgery was Monday) Everytime the shuttle took us anywhere or when we went out for a walk we tried to find the trashiest place and say to the other one "yep, that's CH, step right up". I guess we have a weird sense of humor but I really think the joking part kept me from getting too nervous. Once we arrived at the real CHTRC we couldn't have been more pleased. The place was spotless and everyone was super nice.

I understand that everyone goes into this journey with the "what if" questions. I did. That's normal. Not everyone is gonna have the same outcomes. There are negatives along with many positives to it. That's why it's called a journey. I can promise you one thing. You will walk away from CHTRC and be very happy that you did it. I wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide to do!!

NJgirlinWI.... WOW... we are practically neighbors! I live only about 35-40 mins. from you, near Shawano! Thank you everyone for your responses. The issue I am having in deciding is that both places I am deciding between are "state of the art" facilities with TR specialists that ONLY perform TR surgeries and have both been doing it for over 30 years! Both places have support groups... but CH's website is definitely more informative and more supportive! I have just been afraid of choosing based solely on a good website..... Thank you for your feedback on your experiences.

WIMom27, I flew to NC from Moscow Russia to have my surgery at CHTRC on 10/14/10. I don't regret one dime that we spent on the trip or the surgery. You can tell from the message boards and the information on this website that the entire staff cares about every patient. They think of everything!!! I love the fact that they require you to stay at a certain hotel, which is fantastic, so a nurse can come check on you. If you decide on CHTRC, you won't be disappointed!

I forgot to mention that in my last post. As you are in the waiting area just before it's "your turn", there are 2 huge maps on the wall. One map is the US and one is the world, seriously! You put your pin into the map indicating where you are from. We were amazed at how far women come to have CHTRC do their surgery. My husband stayed at the hotel with our kiddo's and my mom drove up from SC to accompany me. She was skeptical at first but when she saw those maps, her eyes got big and her jaw dropped. For once, my darling (and very opinionated) mother was speechless!! It truly is impressive to see all of those colored pins on those maps. It made me realize just how many families have trusted Dr Berger (and now Dr M) to give them another chance...

This is so true. CHTRC is the only place that specializes in tubal-reversal. So many people come all over the world to get their tubes reversed. Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith have follow-up statistics on the outcomes of their surgeries and publish them for everyone to see. No other doctor does this or even has this information! The center keeps in touch with each patient over the long term. CHTRC is the most dedicated tubal-reversal in the world. If you want the best results, this is the place you should come to.

WIMom27 be sure and keep us posted as to what you decide! Too bad we didn't find eachother sooner, we live so close to eachother that we could have carpooled to CHTRC

Posted by Megan, RN (Member # 14922) on November 03, 2010 09:33 AM :
Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith are the only physicians in the country with a practice that is specifically limited to tubal reversal surgery. Reversal surgery is the only procedure we perform here with each doctor performing 2 - 4 reversals daily. We have a high staff/patient ratio with one or two nurses devoted specifically to your care while you are here. All of our nurses have advanced certification in cardiac life support (ACLS) and our anesthesiologists are MD's with board certification in anesthesia. The anesthesiologists are employees here and not anesthesia staff from another hospital or anesthesia service. So everyone here has expertise in caring for and performing reversal surgery. While you are here, you will only be with other women and couples who are here specifically for the same purpose. Please do not hesitate to contact our office with any questions or concerns while making your decision. Megan, RN

WIMom27 CHTRC was the 1st center I cam across when I began thinking about a reversal. And at the time didn't think I wanted to travel from Iowa to NC. Then something in me changed. At that point...I have to tell you that I researched, visited, and had phone contact with more then 25 fertility/tubal reversal specialists across the country. At the time we started our search each of those centers/specialist advised me that the cost of the procedure would be $12000-$20000. My husband and I thought to ourselves, if that was the price we were going to have to pay to have another child, then so-be-it. Each of the offices received my surgical reports, took my $150 consultation fee, either scheduled an appointment or called me on the phone. And each one of them crushed my dreams by telling me that since my tubes were burned I really didn\'t't have a chance at conception even after a reversal and that I should go the IVF route. At that point I was very close to having my mind made up on a center in WI, but something in me told me to give CHTRC a call. So I did...and I think from the second I was greeted over the phone my mind was made up. Each time I have called with an issue, my questions and concerns have all been address by the most friendly, knowledgeable, and caring staff in which I have ever encountered. I send over my surgical report and other information, and within an hour received confirmation that regardless of having my tubes burned during the ligation, they saw no reason why I would not have a very successful chance of conception. The very next day I scheduled my surgery and am now exactly 30 days from my surgery date. I am not only anxious for my surgery, but feel like I have already been made a part of a big CHTRC family and can't wait to meet everyone that has contacted me via phone and email. So if I can tell you anything to help you make your decision it is to call and speak with staff as much as you need to before making your desicion. As woman you know what is best for you and will ultimately make the right choice for you and only you!
~Best Wishes~

Thank you for all of your comments everyone... I honestly feel that I have made my decision final to have my TR at CHTRC! I keep hearing from the other center I was looking at about how wonderful their after care is, etc.... but I have yet to see any of their staff participate in their support board like CHTRC does. Not only do the nurses and other staff join in on discussions but I have seen several posts by Dr. M on here as well, which has really impressed me. I think the longer it takes for me to get the money together and get this going the more doubts I tend to have.... then I get those doubts under control.... then start wondering about things again. I do appreciate all of the support on this board and I haven't even scheduled my surgery yet! Hoping that I can at least send in my deposit to open my account within the next couple of weeks!

WImom27, You will not regret having your surgery at CHTRC! I too researched just about every place there was and I just kept coming back to CH. No other place could compare to the statistics and like you said, the support and care shows here on the message board, but just WAIT until you see how you are cared for in person! I don't know which TR center you are talking about and I am not sure what I am allowed to say here, but I considered one b/c it looked so fabulous on their website...at first..and they had a message board yes. But I decided to steer clear of that place. I decided that a lot of effort made to make comparison charts to other TR centers and promises to re-reverse tubes if they become blocked is not a good way to try to reel in business, when CHTRC just has facts and REAL numbers that show their success without having to make cheap shots like that. Does that make sense? That was just how I felt about it. I am pretty sure I know which center you are talking about I hope this helps! Jill

alltiedup.... I'm pretty sure we are talking about the same other TR center.... and the things you mentioned are part of my reasons for not being sure about that one.... I have kept coming back to CH for several years, because of the support board, the wonderful information, the support from the staff, and the statistics, etc. I think I need to stop 2nd guessing and just go with my gut on this one! Thanks for all the support everyone! Now, if I can just pull together the money... we will be in business!

Another Wisconsin girl here (Ashland). I was referred to a University Minnesota hospital to do my surgery, for a starting price of $12,000. I had a feeling that it did not cover lab fees, consultations and so forth. Turns out I was right when I called and talked to their financial representative. That made me start looking on the web for alternatives. The thing I was immediately aware of was that I would have to travel across country no matter which place I choose, being that the quiet of northern Wisconsin is quiet for a reason. The reason I chose Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center was there commitment to their cause. We are what they do. They listen and respond. Right from initial phone questions to panic attacks before surgery, they are there with a gentle hand on your back.
The surgery was simple, the flight back to Minneapolis uneventful. My biggest concern was the 4 hour ride home from airport the day after surgery but with a few pain pills that too was a piece of cake. My baby making skills are not working for me yet, but I am not 25 anymore. There are days when I want to quit(usually CD2, when depression hits) but then by CD10 I am ready to try again.
The only advice I have is to live your life when going through this. Buy those jeans that are on sale, take that little trip, laugh when you can and hold as many babies that are offered to you. Tammy

Why it is best to go to Chapel Hill for Tubal Reversal

Tubal Reversal Patient Explains Her Decision To Have Surgery With Dr. Berger.
'Babymamawannab', a tubal reversal patient writes on the Tubal Reversal Message Board, "I will tell you that when I did my research I was leaning toward Chapel Hill (CH). I called for my op report from my tubal ligation and was informed that my regular ob/gyn also performed this procedure. I immediately scheduled my annual appointment with him and at that appointment discussed TR. He told me that he would do it but he recommended that I go and check out Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center (CHTRC). He said it would be less invasive, no hospital stay thus keeping the cost down and a doctor who only performed this procedure. I never one time mentioned CH even though I had already done my research. I had my TR 4/24/09 and delivered a healthy baby boy exactly 1 year later on 4/24/2010." This post is in response to a new member of the messageboard who is undecided about where to have her tubal reversal performed. Many other patients who have had their tubal reversal surgeries performed at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center post their opinions on why it is the best place to have tubal ligation reversal done. Staff members also provide helpful information about the world's only Tubal Reversal Center.

Welcome to the Tubal Reversal Message Board. I am sure you will receive many responses to your question. We do know how confusing it can be to choose a tubal reversal doctor and we are honored when women and couples choose to come here for surgery with Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith. We hope that everyone who comes for surgery at CHTRC will find we have the most experienced tubal reversal doctors and nurses, excellent service, and a strong committment to helping couples have children after a tubal ligation. We are available evenings and weekends 7 days a week to respond to inquiries and to assist our patients. We hope to meet you in the near future. If I can answer questions, please let me know. Because they are the BEST!! Dr. Berger has done more TR surgeries that anyone in the world. This practice is my ideal of what every medical practice SHOULD be. They think of everything and make sure you are well informed. They care for you as a person, not just a patient. The care and follow up you receive is simply unparalleled. They call at 6 months and one year afterward to check on you. If you have any questions at all 7 days a week you can email and get a reply within hours. I had my TR in 2002 and up to and including my last pregnancy in 2009, I would still email questions and got responses usually within minutes. Their goal is to help you have a successful pregnancy, so your relationship with them does not end when you leave their facility. As long as you need them they are there. You cannot go wrong choosing CHTRC! HTH, Jo Ann

CHTRC is hands down the BEST!! I researched for 2+ years and have 3 TR "places" in surrounding states to me or I could have gone to 2 surgeons (including my OBGYN) that could have performed the surgery for me in a nearby hospital. None of them could stand up to Chapel Hill! The most important thing for us was 1. Who has been performing these surgeries the longest? 2. Type of Facility 3. Type of Procedure to repair (I did NOT want laparascopic procedure done. Yes, it is easier to recover from, but I did not want sloppy surgery done through the view of a camera! That could mean blocked tubes! 4. Cost After lots of research, I always came back here. Dr. B and Dr. M ONLY do reversals, so it felt good knowing their entire job is dedicated to these surgeries. They are doing them every day. I didn't want a guy that does them twice a year. It seemed that the facilities I saw that were cheaper just couldn't produce good statitics or even show expertise, or worse, it would be laparoscopic. I was just in Chapel Hill with my DH in July and we had the best experience! The PP is right, other medical practices SHOULD be run like CHTRC. It is a well oiled machine filled with people who love their job and take top notch care of you from the first phone call until long after your surgery! They are AMAZING!!! No regrets!! Jill

i dont think you will ever find a better place. when you want another child you have to make sure you go to the best.i wouldnt of went anywhere else even if it was half price and next door to my house! just the follow up care is worth the money. none of my other doctors have a message board for support, nor will they answer questions even a year or two after surgery or look over records from other DR's for free.
i thank god every day for Dr berger and his staff when i look a my daughter.

Hi Impatient. I couldn't agree more with what the others have said. My DF had the same reservations as you do. He even refered to CH as the "Walmart of Surgery Centers". LOL! When I met with my regular OB/GYN and told him what I was planning, the first thing he said to me was go some place that does this type of surgery a lot. No other doctors perform 4-6 TR's every day 4 days a week. I figure they have probably seen it all. Also, in reading earlier posts, I discovered that the doctors here have "gone beyond the call of duty" during operations. Several women wrote about the doctors finding fibroids and removing them at no extra charge. Would any doctor do that? I don't want to take that chance. Back to my DF, once he looked over the web site, he was 100% on board to go to CH as well. We likely only get one chance at TR, and I wouldn't go anywhere else. Good luck to you.

Impatient - Simply stated - CH has the most experience performing tubal reversal surgery that any other place. The price is more that reasonable and the center itself is wonderful. Dr.Berger was nothing but straight-forward with my husband and I, and the surgery was exactly what was promised. The nursing staff is EXCEPTIONAL. I received terrific care before and after the surgery, and during the entire year I was ttc I received immediate response from the nursing staff and Dr. Berger himself. The center is clean and professional. The message board provides an excellent source of knowledge and support from ladies that are all over the spectrum trying to conceive. These ladies are THE BEST. It's important to know there is no guarantee - some ladies do not get pg after this surgery. I have many friends that have not been successful and I think it's crucial to understand that other factors can and do affect fertility after TR. No matter how fertile you were before, it may be a very different experience afterward. However, I believe that CH gave me the best chance to be successful naturally after my surgery since my dh and I didn't want nor could we afford IVF. Of course, I'm also a success story with a 2 year old TR baby named Carly. I know it would never have been possible without my reversal and Dr.Berger did an exceptional job. My OB told me after my c-section that my tubes looked completely "untouched" and whoever had done the work was a true genius. My dh was skeptical as well. He didn't like the idea of paying a doctor we never met or seen before, but after watching the DVD we ordered it felt a lot more "real" for both of us. After the consult my dh felt confident it would work for us. I can't say that the other centers are any better or worse that CH, but I know I picked the most experienced and professional center, and I feel one of the reasons I'm looking at my own TR baby is the skill and care of Dr. Berger. I still visit this board after 4 years. I'm no longer ttc - our family is complete - but the friendships and connections I have here at CH are forever. Best of luck!! Tanya

I agree with PPs. I did call a local doctor who did TRs, but the staff was unable to answer my questions. They didn't know how many TRs he had performed, but they did say he didn't do many. They had no statistics. They didn't have any pregnancy rate quotes. These stats can be skewed because people don't follow up, but I liked having them available. Most importantly for me, it had to feel right, and CH did.

Welcome to the Tubal Reversal Message Board, Impatient in California. Some great reasons to choose Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center are the following. Dr. Berger has successfully performed over 8,000 tubal reversals, more than any other Dr. He has pioneered and improved over the years the micro surgical outpatient surgery. Also we keep an updated pregnancy database so that you can see our pregnancy success statistics. I hope this has helped you in your decision and I hope to see you here with us soon.

Impatient- I'm also from California and it was the best decision I have ever made in my life. Yes it is a distance but a very worth it experience on my behalf as well as the other ladies that have had their surgery at CHTRC. My Husband tried to convince me to go elsewhere, like San Diego, Beverly Hills, and what not. After intense research I have found that CHTRC is the world's only premier center that only specializes in just Tubal Reversal. So I asked myself. Do I just want to go anywhere and have the surgery performed or do I want someone that just specializes in just that? After finding CHTRC I was convinced that this was the place for me with no doubt. I then contacted CHTRC and spoke to the staff and said honey, we are flying to CHTRC. With no hesitation we were on our way. Had my surgery with DR.M On May 10, 2010. We are now just starting to TTC. Since my surgery I have found myself being an advocate for all woman who have had a tubal ligation and inform them that they are not alone on all the symptoms that they have because of the decision they made to have a TL performed. I let them know that there are 2 very well specialized Doctors at CHTRC that gives us the opportunity to have another bundle of joy in our arms.

Dear Impatient, We have two doctors who are specialists in Tubal Reversal. It is done on as outpatient surgery...a 3 day committment and 2 or 3 night stay in a local hotel. They restore women's fertility in 98% of their cases. Women come here from ALL over the world! This one of the few places left that when you call you actually talk to a real person! As Julia said, we are available to you 7 days a week! We look forward to helping you start your journey. Anne

I will tell you that when I did my research I was leaning toward CH. I called for my op report from my tubal ligation and was informed that my regular ob/gyn also performed this procedure. I immediately scheduled my annual appointment with him and at that appointment discussed TR. He told me that he would do it but he recommended that I go and check out CHTRC. He said it would be less invasive, no hospital stay thus keeping the cost down and a doctor who only performed this procedure. I never one time mentioned CH even though I had already done my research. I had my TR 4/24/09 and delivered a healthy baby boy exactly 1 year later on 4/24/2010.

Posted by babymamawannab (Member # 13465) on October 02, 2010 02:56 PM :
I should also say that my ob/gyn told me that the day Dr. Berger no longer did this procedure would be a sad day for women everywhere. That was enough for me.

Thanks to Dr. Berger for My Tubal Reversal Baby

Jennifer M. posts this message on the Tubal Reversal Message Board, "I cannot thank you all enough for the amazing work that you do. I delivered my second tubal reversal baby, a precious little girl. Miss Sophia Jeanne joins her three older brothers and my first TR baby, her older sister Olivia Jane, to make five children total for my husband and myself. Without the work that you all do I would never have been able to conceive my girls and truly feel like my family is complete. They are such an amazing addition to our family that none of us can imagine not having them. I know that you hear thank you often, and please know that they are all sincere. You all are extremely special in the work that you do because you not only heal your patients physical symptoms, but you all help to make dreams come true. How many other doctors can say that. Thank you, thank you, thank you for helping me make my dreams come true."

She is SO right! And the excellence continues long after you leave their building. I had my TR in 2002 and every time I have emailed Dr. B or a nurse, I have a reply with minutes. Literally, within minutes. I have 2 TR babies and have had 2 m/c in the last almost 8 years. I have had 100% complete support from them any time I needed it. This is truly an EXCEPTIONAL practice. This should be the standard for all medical care! Jo Ann
